Ser vs. Estar — Spanish I 练习题
Ser and estar both mean to be, but they are not interchangeable. Ser describes what something is inherently or permanently; estar describes how or where something is at the moment. Choosing the wrong verb can change the meaning of a sentence completely.
Present tense conjugations. Ser: soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son. Estar: estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están. Both verbs are irregular and must be memorized; note the accent marks on está, estás, and están, which distinguish them from esta, estas, and estan.
Use ser with the DOCTOR mnemonic: Description (ella es alta), Occupation (soy profesor), Characteristic (el cielo es azul), Time (son las tres), Origin (somos de México), and Relationship (él es mi hermano). Use estar with PLACE: Position (el libro está abierto), Location (Madrid está en España), Action in progress (estoy estudiando), Condition (la puerta está cerrada), and Emotion (estamos contentos).
Some adjectives change meaning depending on the verb. Ser listo means to be clever, while estar listo means to be ready. Ser aburrido means to be boring, while estar aburrido means to be bored. Ser vivo means to be sharp-witted, while estar vivo means to be alive.
One common exception: events take place with ser, not estar. La fiesta es en mi casa (the party is at my house), even though it refers to a location. Locations of people, places, and things still use estar.
