Fractions represent parts of a whole. The numerator (top) counts how many parts you have; the denominator (bottom) tells how many equal parts make the whole.

To add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators, find a common denominator first — usually the least common multiple (LCM). Then add or subtract the numerators while keeping the denominator the same.
