Greetings and Introductions — French I Übungsblatt
Bonjour (good day/hello) is the standard greeting and works in almost any situation, formal or informal. Salut is a casual hi used with friends and family. In the evening, say bonsoir (good evening), and save bonne nuit for when someone is going to bed.
To ask how someone is doing, say Ça va? (informal) or Comment allez-vous? (formal). Ça va works as both the question and the answer: Ça va? Ça va bien, merci. Other responses include très bien (very well), comme ci comme ça (so-so), and pas mal (not bad). Note the cedilla on the c in ça, which makes it sound like an s.
To introduce yourself, say Je m'appelle... (My name is..., literally I call myself). To ask someone's name informally: Comment tu t'appelles? Formally: Comment vous appelez-vous? Use tu with friends, classmates, children, and family; use vous with teachers, strangers, adults you do not know well, and groups of people.
Common farewells: au revoir (goodbye), salut (also means bye), à bientôt (see you soon), à demain (see you tomorrow), and bonne journée (have a good day). When meeting someone for the first time, say enchanté (masculine) or enchantée (feminine), meaning nice to meet you.
